The decision is being considered as a way to circumvent the dispute between the United States and the European Union.

Lufthansa is considering registering its highly anticipated Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft in Switzerland as a way to circumvent the ongoing tariff dispute between the United States and the European Union.

The move comes amid difficulties the German airline faces in importing aircraft directly to Germany due to retaliatory tariffs imposed during the trade conflict that began under former U.S. President Donald Trump.

According to aeroTELEGRAPH, Lufthansa—awaiting the arrival of its new Dreamliners—should have already received some of the 15 Boeing 787-9s it has on order, as reported by our partner outlet, Aeroin.

These aircraft, currently stored in Charleston, South Carolina, have not yet been delivered due to delays in certifying the newly acquired seats Lufthansa plans to install. Despite this, the airline had initially intended to deploy the planes on medium-haul routes starting in the European summer.

However, the potential imposition of tariffs of up to 200% on aircraft entering the European Union has forced the group to reconsider its logistical strategy. Switzerland, which is not an EU member and has not imposed retaliatory tariffs on the U.S., has emerged as a strategic alternative. By initially registering the aircraft in Switzerland, the group could significantly cut down on import costs.

This strategy would leverage the multinational structure of the Lufthansa Group, which already operates in various countries and holds stakes in non-German airlines such as ITA Airways, and potentially Air Europa and TAP. The group's legal and geographical diversity may thus become an operational advantage in times of trade uncertainty.

Lufthansa has not officially confirmed whether it will adopt the Swiss registration route, but German media reports that the option is under serious internal review. If viable, the Dreamliners could later be re-registered in Germany once integrated into the active fleet.

This scenario highlights how the global nature of commercial aviation demands not only efficient logistics but also geopolitical and legal agility to maintain competitiveness.

Lufthansa Group has successfully reached 25.3% female representation in senior leadership across its three top management levels, achieving the target set by IATA’s "25by2025" initiative.

Launched six years ago, "25by2025" aims to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the aviation industry, with over 200 companies committed to this goal.

LUFTHANSA’S COMMITMENT TO GENDER EQUALITY

Michael Niggemann, Executive Board Member at Deutsche Lufthansa AG, responsible for Human Resources and Legal Affairs, highlighted the milestone:

> "We are pleased to have increased female representation in leadership beyond 25%. However, we recognize that there is still progress to be made. While change takes time, it is both essential and necessary. Our goal remains a sustainable development without gender discrimination."

EXPANDING FEMALE LEADERSHIP IN TECHNOLOGY AND BEYOND

Niggemann also emphasized the growth of female leadership in technology and reaffirmed Lufthansa Group’s commitment to advancing women in leadership roles:

> "We will continue driving development programs and establishing guidelines to ensure greater visibility for female candidates in recruitment processes. We want—and will—leverage the full potential of future generations of leaders."

To further increase female representation in leadership, Lufthansa Group has launched a global program for women in executive positions, reinforcing its commitment to equity and inclusion within the organization.

Lufthansa Cargo will adjust its Airfreight Surcharge (ASC) starting January 1, 2025, to account for the rising costs of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) due to mandatory blending regulations. The airline will factor in these additional environmental costs to its pricing structure, particularly for flights departing from European Union (EU) countries, where a 2% SAF blending rate will be required.

Other nations, such as Singapore and India, are also implementing their own SAF quotas, with Singapore mandating 1% SAF by 2026, and India planning quotas between 1-5% by 2027. The EU aims to increase its blending rate to 6% by 2030, while the UK and Japan have set even higher targets of 10%.

Lufthansa Cargo highlights that the increasing cost of SAF cannot be borne solely by the airline industry. While SAF is key to reducing carbon emissions, it is still up to five times more expensive than conventional jet fuel, and supply remains limited. Lufthansa urges policymakers to provide more robust support to build a competitive SAF market.

Introduced in 2015, the Airfreight Surcharge is designed to cover fluctuating operational costs like fuel and security. The surcharge is adjusted based on a cost index monitored by Lufthansa Cargo. Starting in 2025, SAF costs will also be included in this index.

As part of its mission to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, Lufthansa Cargo has set ambitious sustainability goals. The airline aims to cut its CO₂ emissions by 50% by 2030 compared to 2019 levels, through the use of SAF, modern aircraft, and operational efficiency. Its “Sustainable Choice” program also offers customers the option to reduce their carbon footprint with SAF credits and climate protection projects.

SAF, blended with regular jet fuel, reduces carbon emissions by up to 80% over its lifecycle. However, due to its high production costs and limited availability, Lufthansa Cargo stresses the need for governmental action to promote its widespread adoption.

According to reports from The Business Journals, Nashville International Airport could get another transatlantic service from Discover Airlines, which has selected this destination to expand its network in North America.

The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority has been negotiating for months for a European route, to increase competition and create more affordable fares. This possible new transatlantic service will boost business and tourism in the region.

Discover Airlines tentatively begins service to this destination in May 2025 with three flights a week on a 270-seat Airbus A330-200, and the leisure airline must also receive approval from the Lufthansa Group board to materialize this route. Discover’s network in the United States currently has services to Philadelphia, Tampa, Orlando, Fort Myers, Las Vegas, and Anchorage.

In May 2018, British Airways began non-stop flights to Nashville on Boeing 787s, providing the only transatlantic service to that destination. According to statistics from the UK Civil Aviation Authority, 116,655 passengers were flown between Nashville and London-Heathrow in 2023.

After having acquired 41% of the Italian airline ITA Airways, the expansionist ambitions of the Lufthansa group are not only focusing on TAP Air Portugal, but also on another company in northern Europe.

According to Bloomberg, the German airline is considering investing in airBaltic, the Latvian airline that has experienced significant growth over the last decade after being nationalized and is known for being one of the largest operators of the A220 family (specifically, the CS300 variant, for which it was the launch customer when Bombardier still owned it in 2016).

Lufthansa’s entry into airBaltic would occur before the airline launches its anticipated Initial Public Offering (IPO). The negotiations, according to the report, are still in an early stage and no decisions have been made.

Both the German airline and airBaltic, along with the Latvian Ministry of Transport, have refrained from commenting on the information. However, the Minister of Economy, Viktors Valainis, stated that a potential investor was «a very well-known company» according to Baltic News Network. The agency also reported that during a meeting held on August 30, the Latvian government agreed that the State should retain at least 25% plus one of the total shares after airBaltic’s IPO. The investor would acquire 10% of the shares.

In 2023, airBaltic transported 6.9 million passengers, a 47% increase compared to 2022. Revenues reached 668 million euros (+34%), with an EBITDAR of 158.9 million euros and profits of 33.7 million euros. In the first half of this year, the number of passengers transported increased by 15%, and revenues by 16.5%, with stable EBITDAR, but losses amounted to 88.8 million euros, mainly due to issues with Pratt & Whitney engines, currency fluctuations, and rising fuel costs.

The Latvian airline operates 47 Airbus A220-300s and expects to close the year with 48 aircraft. By 2029, the fleet is expected to reach 100 A220-300s, considering current orders.

Its network consists of more than 130 routes connecting over 70 destinations through its bases in Riga, Vilnius, Palanga, Tallinn, and Tampere.

The current portfolio of airlines within the Lufthansa Group also includes Austrian Airlines, SWISS, Brussels Airlines, and subsidiaries such as Air Dolomiti, Lufthansa CityLine, Lufthansa Airlines, Edelweiss, Discover Airlines, and Eurowings.

Last year, the company canceled the Dusseldorf route, leaving these two German destinations without transatlantic services. The airline will continue to operate from Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport to Frankfurt and Munich.

Stuttgart is home to Porsche and Mercedes-Benz, also based in Atlanta. This service catered to the market of automotive travelers, the airline for decades has operated out of Stuttgart. Delta customers can access this destination with its transatlantic partners Air France and KLM through their hubs in Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Amsterdam.

Delta established itself as the U.S. airline flying to the most destinations in Germany with a total of five, now with the cancellation of the Stuttgart route the number is reduced to three, the same number as United Airlines.
The pilots and cabin crew of Discover, Lufthansa Group’s holiday airline, have announced a four-day strike that will begin on Tuesday, August 27 at 0:00 (CET) and will extend until 23:59 on Friday, August 30.

The industrial action will affect all Discover Airlines flights departing from German airports and comes as a result of the lack of agreement with the unions VC (pilots) and UFO (CC) in the context of the negotiation of new collective agreements reached with Verdi, another pilots’ and CC union, whose conditions are deemed unacceptable by the first two.

«The management of Discover Airlines, which has been refusing appropriate tariff agreements through the majority cabin crew union UFO for years, already made a strike inevitable earlier this year. Now, this management is once again forcing UFO into an industrial dispute. In a sudden and nocturnal action, a tariff agreement was hastily created with another union, which contains unacceptable conditions for our members, while Discover’s management refuses to continue negotiations with UFO,» said Joachim Vázquez Bürger, UFO president.

«Our colleagues, after years of stagnation, are now facing not only – completely unexpectedly and suddenly – insufficient conditions, but also unprecedentedly unsupportive conditions, some of which are unbearable. The fact that essential salary components are tied to the employer’s favored union affiliation is already highly questionable. But the fact that they are willing to abuse job security for a membership recruitment program reminiscent of mobile phone providers, under the premise of ‘those who do not participate will be dismissed more quickly,’ leaves us stunned. Unfortunately, the employer leaves us no other choice but to engage in industrial action,» added Harry Jaeger, head of tariff policy.

The airline responded by condemning this industrial action, highlighting that the agreement reached with Verdi guarantees wage increases of up to 38% for CC and up to 16% for pilots.

THE IMPACT OF THE DISCOVER STRIKE

According to information obtained by Aviacionline through Cirium, this week Discover has 248 flights scheduled from its airports in Germany, so the industrial action could affect around 50,000 passengers (plus a similar number on inbound flights).

From its main bases in Frankfurt and Munich, Discover Airlines flies to around 40 destinations in Europe, Africa, North America, and the Caribbean.

The European Commission has initiated an in-depth investigation to evaluate whether a €321.2 million German restructuring aid measure for Condor adheres to EU State aid regulations. This measure, originally approved in July 2021 under the State Aid Rescue and Restructuring Guidelines, was annulled by the General Court’s judgment on May 8, 2024.

Condor, a German charter airline specializing in leisure travel, faced insolvency in September 2019 following the liquidation of its parent company, the Thomas Cook Group. The 2021 restructuring measure included a €90 million debt write-off on a state-guaranteed public loan by KfW, adjustments to the repayment conditions of the remaining loan, and a €20.2 million debt write-off on interest due to coronavirus compensation.

The Guidelines on State Aid for Rescuing and Restructuring Non-financial Undertakings in Difficulty outline the conditions under which EU Member States can provide financial aid to struggling businesses. Last revised in 2014, these guidelines aim to support companies in financial distress while ensuring fair competition within the internal market. They focus on rescue aid for short-term support, restructuring aid for long-term viability plans, and temporary restructuring support as a bridge to stability.

Companies must demonstrate their potential for returning to long-term viability through a restructuring plan to qualify for aid. The guidelines emphasize minimizing distortions to competition by limiting aid to the minimum necessary and ensuring it’s a one-time intervention. The «one time, last time» principle and measures to mitigate negative effects on the market are key.

The General Court’s decision to annul the Commission’s approval was based on an insufficient assessment of whether Germany received adequate remuneration for the debt write-offs. The Court emphasized the need to evaluate if former shareholders and subordinated debt holders adequately shared the restructuring burden to minimize the aid amount.

In response, the Commission’s ongoing investigation will examine potential further burden sharing and reduction of moral hazard. This process will determine the necessity and impact of additional compensatory measures. The investigation’s commencement allows Germany and interested third parties to submit comments, without prejudging the outcome.

After seven months of intense negotiations and a two-day labor dispute, the Independent Flight Attendant Organization (UFO) and Lufthansa’s subsidiary, CityLine, have reached an agreement on a new collective pay agreement that will benefit approximately 900 flight attendants.

The agreement includes a 7.5% raise in the pay scale retroactive to January 1, 2024, and another 4.5% increase starting March 1, 2025. Additionally, various allowances will be increased, and a one-time payment of 750 euros will be granted, both prorated for part-time employees. Starting next year, the holiday bonus will also increase by 150 euros.

«Negotiations were tough and stalled at times, but in the end, thanks to the support of the CityLine cabin crew, we achieved a real success. The retroactivity of the salary increases was particularly important to us to ensure that the long negotiation period did not disadvantage the cabin crew,» explained Harry Jaeger, Head of Pay Policy at UFO.

The short duration of the new agreement, which will end in December 2025, was essential for UFO due to the impending liquidation of CityLine. «A particularly difficult point of negotiation was the pay for flight attendants with additional functions in the training area. To avoid further delaying the deserved salary increases for the cabin crew, we agreed on a negotiation obligation with the employer,» Jaeger added.

UFO members will now vote on the acceptance of the new agreement through an internal ballot.

«We are very pleased to have been able to negotiate an excellent agreement for the CityLine crew. In some parts, this pay package is even better than existing agreements within the group. Most importantly, it ensures that the crew receives the monetary appreciation they more than deserve. The years of sacrifice due to growth prospects, which are now known not to materialize at CityLine, needed to be compensated with a substantial pay increase. With this agreement, we consider this goal to have been achieved. UFO continues to advocate at all levels for responsible job security for Lufthansa CityLine cabin staff and demands contractually regulated transfer options from CityLine to Lufthansa. Carsten Spohr has given his word on this,» concluded Joachim Vázquez Bürger, UFO Chairman.

The final approval of the new agreement now depends on the vote of UFO members, who will decide whether to accept the agreed terms.

Lufthansa continues to postpone the resumption of its flights to Iran due to the high tensions caused by the Islamic dictatorship.

The decision by the German company to delay flights until June 16, already suspended since April 19, was made on Saturday, before the crash of the Bell 212 Twin Huey helicopter carrying the country’s president, Ebrahim Raisi, yesterday, according to the Iran International agency.

The flights, operated from Frankfurt by Lufthansa and from Vienna by its subsidiary Austrian, were suspended in April after Iran launched a massive missile attack on Israel, posing a risk to air traffic in the region.

Since the decision is by the airline and not by governments, Iran Air continues to connect Germany with Tehran regularly, as do other European countries.

easyJet is celebrating its 20th anniversary in Berlin. On April 28, 2004, the low-cost airline’s first aircraft landed at Berlin-Schönefeld Airport from Liverpool. The airline also began flying from Berlin-Tegel in 2018.

The opening of Berliń-Brandenburg was an important development in the long-standing partnership between the airport authority and easyJet. On October 31, 2020, the carrier was one of the first airlines to land at the new Terminal 1 of the German capital’s newest airport and was the first airline to take off at Brandenburg Airport a day later.

easyJet has been supporting the growth of connectivity in the German capital region for 20 years. With its extensive route network, the low-cost airline boosts tourism and business in Berlin and has demonstrated its commitment to Brandenburg Airport through investments such as its maintenance hangar.

In the 2024 summer schedule, the low-cost airline will have services to more than 50 destinations from Berlin-Brandenburg, including new destinations to Antalya, Izmir, Toulouse, Birmingham, and Salerno. There is also a wide range of leisure and business destinations on offer. The most popular easyJet routes are London, Milan, Amsterdam, Paris and Basel.

Lufthansa Technik will provide maintenance services for Frontier Airlines‘ Airbus A320 Family aircraft following the signing of a five-year contract, which includes digital diagnostic services for aircraft through the AVIATAR platform.

Frontier Airlines plans to perform maintenance operations for approximately 300 aircraft in Puerto Rico over the next five years. Previously, Lufthansa Technik’s U.S. base maintenance centers completed a one-year, single-line base maintenance service cooperation. Lufthansa Technik has also supplied spare parts to the U.S. airline for years.

Lufthansa Technik Puerto Rico (LTPR) specializes in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) of Airbus A320 family aircraft. The plant’s strategic location in the Caribbean allows it to serve its customers in North, Central, and South America. The company occupies an area of 215,000 square feet of modern facilities and 5 production lines at the Rafael Hernandez Airport in Aguadilla, employing a team of more than 400 highly qualified professionals.

«Based on the results of our initial partnership with Lufthansa Technik Puerto Rico, we are pleased to expand the relationship with this multi-year aircraft maintenance services agreement. Their base maintenance, component support, and AVIATAR platform will help support our focus on efficient, high-quality maintenance programs,» said Jeffrey Moore, Vice President of Technical Operations for Frontier Airlines.

«We seek to support all aspects of base maintenance for Frontier Airlines and our other customers through our ongoing commitment to excellence, quality, and safety on every project. To achieve this, we plan to integrate additional contracted services for Frontier Airlines into upcoming maintenance activities, such as component support, and introduce new digital solutions,» said Joerg Speri, CEO of Lufthansa Technik Puerto Rico.

Frontier Airlines also signed a long-term agreement to fully utilize AVIATAR. The ultra-low-cost airline will benefit from many digital products, from predictive health analytics to status monitoring. AVIATAR condition monitoring incorporates data from a variety of sources to provide an unprecedented overview of aircraft condition and parts.

Predictive condition analysis can predict problems, reduce downtime, transform maintenance events and provide proactive recommendations to improve component troubleshooting efficiency. This reduces maintenance costs and prevents operational incidents, delays or AOG.

Lufthansa’s cabin crew union, Unabhängige Flugbegleiter Organisation (UFO), announced on Saturday (9) that its members have voted to take further industrial action that will affect the airline’s operations.

This, they say, is because «management continues to refuse to adequately address our wage demands».

The strike will run from Tuesday 12 and Wednesday 13 March, from 4am to 11pm respectively.

All Lufthansa and Lufthansa CityLine flights departing from Frankfurt on Tuesday and all departures from Munich Airport on Wednesday will be affected.

«We call on all Lufthansa and Lufthansa CityLine cabin crew members mentioned in the respective strike notices to stop working to the extent specified therein. It is now up to the employer to respond appropriately to our wage demands,» said Joachim Vázquez Bürger, Chairman of the UFO Executive Board, who further stressed that the demands are reasonable and fair considering that on Thursday Lufthansa Group reported profits of 1.7 billion euros over the period 2023.

«The cabin crew must also participate in this success and the concessions made during the coronavirus crisis must be adequately compensated,» concluded Vázquez Bürger.

Harry Jaeger, UFO’s Head of Collective Bargaining Policy and chief negotiator, said that there have been 15 rounds of negotiations in which Lufthansa has not been favourable to the orders. «We cannot understand this. We would have liked to find good results for our colleagues at the negotiating table, as has been the norm in the past,» he said.

Via its Twitter account, Lufthansa said it «anticipates significant impacts on the flight schedule» and that affected passengers will receive information about cancellations or rescheduling options via e-mail tomorrow.

Lufthansa’s operations had already been affected this week after the Verdi union, which brings together ground service workers, staged a 60-hour strike between the night of Wednesday 6 and the morning of Saturday 9.
