The airline and tour operator will base six aircraft, including five A321neos, and offer 29 sunshine destinations starting March 2026. Over 300 jobs will be created.

Jet2.com and Jet2holidays will expand their operations to London Gatwick Airport (LGW), establishing it as their 14th UK base. The first flights will commence on March 26, 2026, timed for the Easter season.

This move marks the first major leisure airline arrival at Gatwick since 2020 and positions Jet2 as the largest new based airline at the airport this century. Today, the territory is dominated by Easyjet, which accounts for 38% of seat capacity, according to data obtained by Aviacionline through Cirium. British Airways ranks second with 16%.

On the other hand, Jet2 currently divides its operations in the British capital between Stansted and Luton airports, with 6.1% and 2.6% of its total seat capacity across its entire network (Manchester ranks first with 16.2%, followed by Birmingham with 8.2% and Newcastle with 7.1%).

The company will base a fleet of six aircraft at LGW, including five new Airbus A321neo aircraft.

The expansion also represents a investment in the region, with the initial creation of over 300 direct jobs across roles including flight deck, cabin crew, engineering, and ground operations.

"Today’s announcement represents an incredibly exciting moment for Jet2," said Steve Heapy, CEO of Jet2. "For many years, our ambition has been to provide our differentiated, service-led, end-to-end product offering from London Gatwick, and we see this as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to accelerate our growth."

Pierre-Hugues, Chief Executive of London Gatwick, commented: "We are thrilled to welcome Jet2 to London Gatwick, marking an exciting new chapter for the airport and our passengers. Jet2's arrival brings even more choice and flexibility to passengers across the South East and beyond."

The IAG group will equip over 500 aircraft with Starlink WiFi, reaching 450 Mbps speeds. All its airlines (IB, BA, VY, EI, LV) are included.

International Airlines Group (IAG) announced a strategic partnership with Starlink to implement high-speed WiFi connectivity on more than 500 aircraft across all its airlines. The agreement confirms the inclusion of Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia, LEVEL, and Vueling.

A NEW STANDARD FOR THE IAG GROUP

The rollout will begin in 2026. British Airways is framing the decision as part of its £7bn transformation plan. Its CEO, Sean Doyle, stated this is a "game-changer" that will offer "Wi-Fi that feels like home."

LEVEL, IAG's long-haul airline based in Barcelona, is also joining. It plans to begin implementation in late 2026. Nuria Escorihuela, LEVEL's Chief Customer Officer, commented that adding Starlink "will allow us to offer unprecedented onboard connectivity."

In Iberia's case, the upgrade is part of its 2030 Flight Plan, which includes a total investment of 6 billion euros.

Luis Gallego, IAG's CEO, noted that "staying connected in the skies is increasingly important" and that the introduction of Starlink "will transform onboard connectivity".

HIGH-SPEED CONNECTIVITY

Starlink's technology uses a low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation to provide global coverage. The service will offer download speeds of up to 450 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 70 Mbps.

Access will be free for all passengers, regardless of their travel cabin: Economy, Premium Economy, or Business.

The United Kingdom government has announced measures to reduce the dependency of the migration and border system on taxpayer funding, as detailed on the official website.

The proposed changes presented to Parliament will allow for an increase in the maximum fee charged for various immigration and nationality products and services, including:

• The Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) fee increasing to £16
• The certificate of sponsorship fee rising to £525
• Naturalization as a British citizen increasing to £1,605
• Naturalization as a British Overseas Territories citizen rising to £1,070

These changes to ETAs, certificates of sponsorship, and nationality products are expected to generate an additional £269 million annually, according to the announcement.

As part of the government's Change Plan, ETAs aim to streamline the immigration system, offering a faster and more secure process for the millions of people crossing the UK border each year.

The introduction of ETAs aligns with border security approaches adopted by countries such as the United States and Australia, which have implemented similar systems.

In response to feedback from the aviation industry, the government has agreed to a temporary exemption for passengers transiting through the airside area without passing through UK border control. This measure will primarily affect Heathrow and Manchester airports, the only UK airports currently offering transit services. The necessity of this exemption will remain under review.

Parliament will debate the proposed legislation, requiring approval from both Houses. If approved, the proposed fees will be implemented by amending the Immigration and Nationality (Fees) Regulations 2018 as soon as parliamentary schedules allow.

G-ZBLJ made its first commercial service on 9 September on a flight between London-Heathrow and Bridgetown in Barbados.

British Airways took delivery of its first Dreamliner in 2013, and since then it has become a staple aircraft in long-haul operations, with the addition of the -8 and -9 models allowing the airline to fly point-to-point routes including Pittsburgh, Nashville, New Orleans, Cincinnati and Portland.

The British Airways Dreamliner fleet consists of twelve 787-8s, eighteen 787-9s and ten 787-10s with eight on order. British Airways’ 787-10 has a configuration of 256 seats in four classes: eight First Class, 48 Business Class, 35 Premium Economy and 165 in Economy.

Virgin Atlantic has confirmed an order for seven Airbus A330-900s. As part of a $17 billion fleet transformation project, the airline operates one of the youngest fleets across the North Atlantic.

By 2028, Virgin Atlantic will operate a mixed fleet of 45 next-generation aircraft, with an average age of only 6.4 years. The seven new A330-900s will be delivered starting in 2027 and will be purchased directly from Airbus, increasing the number of owned aircraft in the fleet. This order adds to the initial A330neo order placed in 2019, making Virgin Atlantic the first UK airline to order this aircraft type. The total A330neo fleet will reach 19, consolidating its strategic partnership with Airbus.

Currently, Virgin Atlantic operates five A330-900s on routes to destinations such as New York, Boston, and Miami, with three more to be delivered this year and four by the end of 2026. As part of the fleet transformation, the airline plans to gradually retire its A330-300s starting in September 2024. These aircraft, which joined the fleet in 2011, will be replaced by the more efficient A330-900s, designed to be 13% more fuel and carbon-efficient.

In addition to the new aircraft, Virgin Atlantic has agreed to extend long-term leasing contracts with AerCap for seven Boeing 787-9s. These aircraft will continue to operate on various routes, including the Caribbean, North America, and India, as well as new routes to the Maldives and Bengaluru, India.

Shai Weiss, CEO of Virgin Atlantic, commented, “Today we complete our multi-billion dollar fleet transformation with the purchase of seven additional A330-900s, which we know our customers and our staff love to fly. Operating the youngest fleet is the most effective tool to decarbonize long-haul aviation, and we are proud to operate one of the youngest, most fuel and carbon-efficient fleets across the Atlantic.”

Christian Scherer, Chief Commercial Officer of Airbus, added, “We are grateful for Virgin Atlantic’s decision to expand their A330neo fleet as part of their strategy to have the youngest fleet across the Atlantic. The A330neo not only offers an unbeatable cost per seat and exceptional passenger experience but also greatly enhances Virgin Atlantic’s fleet efficiency and contributes to their sustainability journey. We look forward to continuing this successful and smooth collaboration for many years.”

The A330neo features the Airspace cabin, offering passengers greater comfort, larger overhead compartments, new lighting systems, and onboard entertainment and connectivity systems. Powered by the latest-generation Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, the A330-900 can fly 13,300 km non-stop. As of June 2024, the A330 family had accumulated 1,798 firm orders from over 130 customers worldwide, including 319 A330neos from 30 customers.

United Airlines and Edinburgh Airport are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the non-stop route between New York/Newark and Edinburgh. Since the service began in June 2004, the U.S. airline has flown more than 2.4 million customers on around 17,000 flights on the route.

«Our flights from Edinburgh to three of our hubs in the continental U.S. offer our customers in Scotland a wide choice of travel and the ability to further connect to more than 150 destinations across the Americas by summer 2024. With such an important relationship between Scotland and the United States, this route continues to facilitate business and tourism, benefiting the economy on both sides of the Atlantic,” said Karolien De Hertogh, Director of Sales for the UK and Ireland at United Airlines.

The airline’s presence in Edinburgh has been growing ever since, offering a year-round daily operation from New York/Newark to Edinburgh, increasing to two daily flights during the peak summer season of 2024, all services are operated on Boeing 757 aircraft.

United also offers seasonal service from Washington-Dulles and Chicago O’Hare to Edinburgh, both routes have a daily flight schedule operated on Boeing 757s. United is the only airline that provides year-round flights from Edinburgh and the United States, and has more seat capacity and flights from Scotland to the United States than all other U.S. airlines combined.

«During this time, the route has been incredibly successful, with more than two million people flying between our two destinations, and United’s global presence has grown with additional routes to Chicago and Washington D.C. as they have made Scotland’s capital city their home. That demonstrates the confidence in Edinburgh and the strong relationship between airline and airport. We look forward to many more anniversaries to come, and maybe even some new routes along the way,” said Gordon Dewar, Chief Executive of Edinburgh Airport.

The opening of easyJet’s first UK base in more than a decade will create around 100 jobs for pilots and cabin crew and 1,200 indirect jobs. Currently, easyJet employs around 10,000 people in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

With this new base, easyJet Holidays, the UK’s fastest-growing tour operator, will provide more than thousands of package holidays from Birmingham to more than 100 European destinations, with a choice of 5,000 hotels.

«With just 25 days to go until the launch of easyJet’s Birmingham Airport-based operations, it has been a pleasure to present its award to easyJet’s five millionth passenger. Reaching this milestone is a testament to the increasingly close relationship between Birmingham Airport and easyJet,» said Tom Screen, Director of Aviation at Birmingham Airport.

More than 70 million passengers flew with Wizz Air at London Luton Airport. The 70 millionth passenger came from a flight from Tirana to London Luton Airport.

Wizz Air is the largest airline at London-Luton, with 11 aircraft based at the airport. The airline operates 50 daily flights to and from the airport to 60 destinations in 28 countries. The airline is also providing special flights this summer to Germany to support fans attending the UEFA European Football Championship.

«This is a fantastic achievement for Wizz Air at London Luton Airport and the latest key milestone in a partnership that has continued to flourish since its first flight from Katowice in Poland almost 20 years ago. Since then, London Luton Airport and Wizz have worked closely together to achieve impressive and sustained growth in passenger numbers and an ever-increasing choice of destinations, as well as collaborating on new solutions that support the airport’s commitment to sustainable aviation» said Jonathan Rayner, Commercial Director at London Luton Airport.

«London Luton Airport is a special place for us. It houses our UK headquarters and is the airport from which we operate the majority of our UK flights. We are delighted to celebrate that more than 70 million people have flown with us to and from this base. This milestone could not have been achieved without the dedication, integrity and passion of our staff. We look forward to continuing our long-standing relationship with the airport and welcoming on board even more passengers» said Zsazsa Trubek, Wizz Air’s Director of Corporate Communications.

Wizz Air announced in July 2023 that London-Luton would become an exclusive Airbus A321neo base by 2025. These aircraft have a 239-seat configuration, the model change offers a 50% reduction in carbon footprint, a 20% reduction in fuel consumption and half the amount of nitrogen emissions compared to previous generation aircraft.

The low-cost airline currently employs around 600 people at London-Luton and will celebrate its 20th anniversary this year.

From June 1, Air China will start a daily operation to London Gatwick from Beijing on Airbus A330-300 aircraft, while China Southern will start a thrice-weekly service to Guangzhou on June 20, operated on Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft.

The new services bring the number of weekly flights from London Gatwick to China to 26 alongside existing flights to Shanghai (China Eastern and Air China) and Zhengzhou (China Southern). This, combined with services from Air India, Emirates, Saudia and Qatar Airways, plus new Singapore Airlines routes and Azerbaijan Airlines flights to Baku, this summer London Gatwick will have 85 weekly flights to Asia.

The additional routes supported growth in travel demand and will offer regional and domestic trade opportunities. In 2023, the UK exported £37.5 billion worth of goods and services to China, an increase of 11.9% compared to 2022.

The flights will also boost economic activity to the tourism industry in London and the Southeast, as Chinese visitors spent £1,937 per visit to the UK and £1.71 billion in total in 2019.

«These new services to China are fantastic news for both passengers and businesses in London and the South East, offering increased opportunities for tourism and trade. Having welcomed Air China and China Southern to the airport last year, the additional routes underline the companies’ commitment to London Gatwick’s growth. Together with China Eastern, we are delighted to continue to build on these positive relationships with the three major Chinese airlines,» said Stephanie Wear, London Gatwick’s Vice President of Aviation Development.

EasyJet confirmed this Tuesday (19) an order for 157 aircraft from the A320neo family, split between 56 A320neo and 101 A321neo, to be delivered between 2029 and 2034. The agreement also includes 100 purchase rights and the conversion of 35 A320neo already in the order book to the A321neo variant.

The ultra low-cost highlighted that this order secures factory slots (very limited in the narrow-body segment until at least 2029) that will allow them to cement growth well into the next decade, as well as modernizing their fleet by retiring all A319s and replacing about half of the A320ceos.

The current fleet of Easyjet (and its subsidiaries Easyjet Europe and Easyjet Switzerland) is composed of:

* 136 A320 with an average age of 10.3 years.
* 73 A319 with an average age of 15.3 years.
* 48 A320neo with an average age of 3.7 years (plus 124 on order)
* 11 A321neo with an average age of 4.3 years (plus 33 on order)

«e are very pleased to be able to confirm this significant order which not only enables easyJet to replace its older aircraft with more efficient aircraft, a core component of our net zero roadmap, but also provides us the ability for disciplined growth, including the significant opportunity that upgauging brings«, said Johan Lundgren, CEO of EasyJet.

Christian Scherer, Chief Commercial Officer and Head of International at Airbus, said, «Airbus is delighted to be accompanying easyJet in its fleet growth and renewal. Its Airbus fleet allows easyJet to differentiate its offering in its competitive market with the most state-of-the-art, modern and comfortable aircraft«.

«EasyJet and Airbus both are strong advocates for the decarbonisation of the aviation sector and so this significant investment into the most fuel efficient and SAF-capable aircraft is a testimony to our joint commitment in this respect.
Global Airlines will collaborate with JETMS, a subsidiary of Avia, to revamp the interior of its first Airbus A380, that it will use for flights between London and the United States. Work on the first aircraft is scheduled to begin in January 2024. The airline, founded in 2022, aims to «enhance the passenger experience for First Class, Business, and Economy travelers.»

Initially, JETMS will remodel the aircraft’s interior, preparing it for its inaugural flights, while the remaining planes the Global is waiting for will undergo a complete refurbishment tailored to the airline’s specifications. Factorydesign was responsible for conceptualizing the fleet’s interiors.

I look forward to sharing images and videos of this transformation with our passengers to showcase the progress we are making in preparation for the entry into service of the first aircraft,» said the executive.

Gegams Hanamirjans, CEO of JETMS, added to his counterpart’s remarks. The executive stated, «Having the opportunity to contribute to the resurgence of the A380 in the global skies was a project that excited everyone in the company and serves as a testament to the incredible advancements we have made this year. Our focus is on ensuring that all elements of the supply chain are in place. This will allow us to commence the renovation of the first aircraft early next year.»

Global Airlines anticipates that the first commercial operations using its A380 with a refurbished interior will take place in the spring of 2024.
The parent company of British Airways, IAG, is currently engaged in negotiations with both Airbus and Boeing to replace at least a part of their aging Boeing 777-200ERs, according to Reuters. The objective is a potential order of at least 20 widebody aircraft.

Currently, British Airways operates a fleet of forty-three Boeing 777-200ERs, along with sixteen 777-300ERs. This makes the smallest member of the triple seven family the most utilized aircraft on their long-haul routes. However, since 39 of these aircraft were delivered between 1997 and 2001, with only four delivered in 2009, the average age of the type is 23 years.

Two weeks ago, IAG’s main competitor, Air France-KLM, revealed its plans to modernize its 777-200ER fleet. The aviation group has chosen the A350 to replace these aircraft, which will also serve as replacements for its Airbus A330s. KLM anticipates receiving its first A350 in 2026.
In a significant operational advancement, Global Airlines and the Portuguese Hi Fly have signed an agreement to collaborate on the development and maintenance of the four Airbus A380 planes that the new British airline has decided to purchase.

Hi Fly, which has the distinction of being the first airline in the world to acquire the Airbus A380 in the secondary market, will leverage its experience with this model to work with Global Airlines, not only in readiness for service but also in the aspiration to offer customers an experience aboard the largest passenger plane in the world.

The immediate focus for both companies will be the Entry into Service (EIS) and Return to Service (RTS) processes for Global Airlines’ first plane, anticipated in the coming months. However, both parties will seek ways to further strengthen their collaboration.

James Asquith, CEO and founder of Global Airlines said they have «waited a long time to make this announcement. From the beginning, at Global Airlines, we wanted to work with the most prominent and experienced partners, and Hi Fly is precisely that.”

«The highlight for us is that the Hi Fly team knows the A380 inside out, and their knowledge of maintenance and technical acceptance will be crucial for our first aircraft; all these are critical phases before starting the implementation of our new interiors and other essential components of our service proposal and passenger experience. We are proud to collaborate with Hi Fly and I see boundless potential in this partnership,” he added.

For his part, Antonios Efthymiou, CEO and director of Hi Fly, said that as soon as James and his team introduced Global Airlines to the world, they were thrilled to be part of the reinvention of the A380. His passion for the A380 and belief in its potential to revolutionize the flight experience for passengers is shared throughout our organization.

Ryanair vehemently criticized the National Air Traffic Services (NATS) for the information contained in its preliminary report about the significant disruption in the UK airspace on August 28th and 29th. According to Ryanair, the NATS report contains a number of inaccuracies and fails to take full responsibility for the large-scale disruptions which greatly affected operations and passengers.

DISCREPANCIES IN REPORTED FLIGHT DELAYS AND CANCELLATIONS

Ryanair highlighted the discrepancies between the figures reported by NATS and the actual numbers as confirmed by other sources such as Eurocontrol. The release indicated that while NATS claimed that 1,500 flights were cancelled on the day, Eurocontrol suggested the number to be over 2,000. Moreover, Ryanair disputed NATS’ figures on flight delays, stating that over 1,000 of its own flights were delayed, in contrast to the 575 reported delays cited by NATS.

QUESTIONS OVER BACKUP SYSTEM EFFICACY

The airline raised serious concerns regarding the efficacy of NATS’ backup systems. They pointed out that one inaccurate flight plan had the ability to compromise not only the primary ATC system but also its backup, questioning the reliability of such systems in ensuring seamless air traffic operations. The press release urged NATS to address why its backup system failed and to articulate measures being put in place to prevent such occurrences in the future.

DELAYS IN COMMUNICATION AND REMOTE SUPPORT

Ryanair also took issue with the delay in communication from NATS about the system collapse, noting that they were informed about the incident three hours after NATS became aware, and that the notification came from Eurocontrol rather than NATS. Further criticism was leveled at NATS’ engineering team, whom Ryanair accused of being ineffective in dealing with the situation as they were «supporting remotely to reduce travel time», which Ryanair interpreted as «sitting at home doing nothing useful».

CALLS FOR COMPENSATION AND REIMBURSEMENT

Ryanair’s CEO, Michael O’Leary, asserted that NATS had a moral obligation to reimburse airlines for the considerable costs incurred during the disruption, including hotel accommodations, meals, and alternative transport arrangements for passengers. O’Leary mentioned that Ryanair alone had to deal with over 370 flight cancellations affecting over 63,000 passengers, and more than 1,500 flight delays impacting over 270,000 passengers over the two days. He argued that NATS should not absolve itself from the responsibility of compensating airlines for these costs, urging the Secretary of Transport, Mark Harper, to intervene if necessary.

SEEKING ACCOUNTABILITY AND FUTURE PREVENTIVE MEASURES

In the statement, O’Leary emphasized the need for NATS to fully acknowledge the extent of the disruption, stating that the report «ridiculously understates» the number of affected flights and passengers. He urged NATS to take responsibility for what he termed as «lamentable incompetence» and to commit to enhancing the reliability of its systems to prevent such large-scale disruptions in the future.

Ryanair is urging for a transparent, factually accurate account of the events that transpired, and for NATS to initiate efforts in bolstering their infrastructure to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The call for financial reimbursement, according to O’Leary, stems from a need for accountability and ensuring the welfare of both the airlines and the passengers affected.

After more than six years since its sudden closure, Monarch Airlines appears to be on the brink of a revival, preparing to resume operations in the United Kingdom. The airline ceased its activities in October 2017 after flying for half a century, with a primary focus on leisure travel.

Its troubles initiated with a series of strategic shifts aimed at competing with low-cost carriers like EasyJet and Ryanair. The company struggled to regain profitability, changing hands multiple times. However, political instability in popular Mediterranean destinations further exacerbated the financial turmoil of its operations.

In its final days, the government kept a vigilant eye on the airline. Nonetheless, even with the additional time granted, the financial situation remained unchanged. As rumors of flight cancellations circulated, the company began hiking its fares.

On October 2, 2017, without prior notice, the airline performed its last flight, leaving 110,000 passengers stranded. Furthermore, the travel plans of over 300,000 people who had booked flights with the airline were abruptly shattered. The government had to launch a massive airborne rescue operation to repatriate stranded British citizens abroad. This event marked the bankruptcy of the largest airline in the region at that time.

Now, as reported by our affiliated site AEROIN, Monarch Airlines has resurfaced on Twitter and its official website, promising a comeback under a new brand and new ownership.
